Hayes in a blaze of glory
www.thisisnottingham.co.uk

Former Savage Garden front man Darren Hayes has made a bold move by funding his own show at the Albert Hall. Luckily, it's a hit.

Once a multi-million seller with Australian pop duo Savage Garden, Darren Hayes has since lost his major record deal and self-funded both his recent third solo album and this tour.

Watching a singer at this stage could have been a depressing experience, with the underlying feeling that it's one more show here, then the end of the pier.

But if Hayes is going down, it's in a blaze of glory, blowing his life savings in the process.

Booking himself into the Albert Hall was a bold move to start with, but to appear atop what looked like a wrought iron bridge, in front of a backdrop that would eventually turn into a giant, 3D, disco-flashing, fold-out origami bird, was extravagance.

Being his own boss has allowed him to move beyond his earlier, girly-voiced blandness, too. Though he overdid it on the ballads, new tracks such as How to Build a Time Machine were delightfully odd electropop.

The odd track from his old band sneaked in, including an interestingly reworked Affirmation, but he still managed two encores without playing Savage Garden's biggest hit, Truly Madly Deeply.

Ignoring such a major part of his past showed an admirable faith in his shaky future.
