In June, Darren and Daniel abandon the five piece, Red Edge, and decide to do it alone.
They name their new duo Savage Garden, referencing Anne Rice’s ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ ( “The mind of each man is a Savage Garden…” ).
The pair start writing, and by the end of the year have enough material for a demo tape.
After sending out 150 packages to labels around the world, Daniel and Darren meet Australian music business entrepreneur John Woodruff, who signs them to a production deal.
My role with Savage Garden has changed with every passing day over the half-a-dozen years. Initially they sent me a demo tape, and as every one will be aware, I was completely fascinated. I flew to Brisbane almost immediately to meet the guys, and over the period of the next few months managed to gain their confidence. We started to work together on the first record, and after many hours of discussions and hard work, started to see some success.
